Katsika Kabana, CORFU

  • FROM £1,400 PER WEEK

If you love truly stunning 360% views. Total tranquillity. Unspoilt mountain walks. An abundance of wild flowers in the spring, unusual wildlife and birds, then you will love Katsika Kabana the sublimely comfortable Corfu home of Charles and Meregan Norwood.

Katsika Kabana which means Goat Bell is named, because when you sit outside you can hear the goat herds in the hills behind and sometimes even in the garden! This is a very different Corfu to the tourist shops, beach side tavernas and speed boats normally associated with this pretty Ionian Island. However if you want to dip into all this it is only 15 minutes away by car. The villa is perched 1300 feet above the harbour of Kassiopi 500 metres outside the small village of Santa. You can lie in bed and look down onto Kassiopi harbour below.

Katsika Kabana is for those who want an utterly relaxing retreat. It may not be for everyone because although the nearest neighbours are hidden only 250 metres away over the hill, it is isolated and found by a stimulating and scenic drive up into the Corfu hills. Once there you will find every comfort, including a mosaic lined swimming pool. Katsika Kabana is for people who want to totally relax.

The house is the private home of Charles and Meregan and not a rental property as such, it is furnished with their personal belongings collected from all over the world and as such is a comfortable loved home, that is warm and cosy in winter and cool and breezy in the hot months of summer. Unlike many Corfu villas the house gets the sun all day and mosquitoes are of a minimum as it is out of the Olive trees that harbour these annoying insects.

You enter the villa up a small flight of stone steps past the pretty stone garage and store via a small paved court yard where orange trees and vines grow. The front door leads to a small glass porch and office and through big double oak doors which lead into the main part of the house. The villa is designed for very easy living. The main part of the house consists of one large bright and airy room with cathedral ceilings and fans for warmer days. Leading off the kitchen is the utility room which has huge fitted cupboards and a small guest loo. This also leads to the back door. The whole length of the sea facing front of the house has large French windows which make the very best of the stunning views and beyond these is a covered terrace where shaded sitting and outside dining. A pretty stone sun trap has recently been added so there are plenty of places to sit, eat and sun bath.

At one end of the main room is the comfortable drawing room with two large soft sofas, television and a wonderful wood burning fire place which also works as a heating system which pumps warm air around the house making the house warm and cosy in the cooler months. The central part of the room has a stylish round dining table with seating for up to eight people. At the opposite end is the kitchen. The cooker is in front of a window which has stunning views east over the wooded hills to the sea and then to the Albanian Mountains.

The pretty kitchen has a wonderful and very large refrigerator and deep freeze. There is an induction ceramic hob and a fitted two ring gas hob for extra cooking and if the power goes off. There is a small dish washer and plentiful well stocked cupboards in both the granite topped island and under the kitchen work tops. The island also doubles as a breakfast bar.

The master bedroom has big windows on three sides including French windows leading to steps down to the swimming pool and sun terrace. These give more stunning views of the sea, mountains and the tiny harbour of Kassiopi 1300 feet below. The room has a king sized bed, fitted cupboards and plenty of storage, there is a ceiling fan for the warmer days and the windows have insect screens. The ensuite bathroom has a bath and walk-in shower, double basins and loo and a heated towel rail. The second bedroom has a king sized bed which converts to two good sized single beds if needed, a fitted cupboard and plenty of storage, there is a ceiling fan for the warmer days and the windows have insect screens. This room has double aspect windows one of which are French windows leading onto a terrace and lawns beyond. The ensuite bathroom has basin, walk in shower and loo and a heated towel rail. Apart from relaxing, there is a mass of things to do or not do, depending on you and your tastes.
